Accommodation in Korea
With increased tourist growth, the number of accommodations in Korea has also increased. No matter where you go, you are sure to find a place to stay. Other than the top hotels theses accommodations include motel/inns called yeogwans and minbak, youth hostels, condominiums, and guest houses. Hotels accept cash, major credit cards and traveler’s checks; most all other accommodations take only cash. Rates for hotel rooms fluctuate according to season. Hotels
Majority of the top hotels in Korea are western-style, comparable to major hotels in any cosmopolitan city of the world. They have twin rooms and a small number of Korean-style rooms with “Ondol” (heated) floors. Hotels are classified into five categories: super deluxe (five-star), deluxe (five-star), first class (four-star), second class (three-star), and third class (two-star). All hotels have a variety of amenities which might include restaurants, coffee shops, cocktail bars, night club, souvenir shops, hair dresser shops, saunas, recreational facilities, health clubs, and business centers. Everything you could want in a big, international, downtown hotel but not cheap.
Broadly speaking, a double room in super deluxe hotels cost 250,000 – 380,000 Korean won (271 – 412 $US); in deluxe 200,000 – 240,000; in first class hotels 140,000 – 200,000; in second class 80,000 – 100,000; and 50,000 – 80,000 won in third class hotels (a 10% service charge and 10% tax is automatically added to the bill). Suites are often double the price of a twin room.
Yeogwans (Motels/Inn)
The most popular type of Korean accommodation among budget travelers is the yeogwan, generally run as family businesses. They range from basic to fancy, traditional to modern. Rooms are of Korean-style with Ondol (heated) floors, a Korean mattress “yo” and a quilt but now many have western- style beds also. All but the cheaper places offer facilities like hot water in bathrooms, free breakfast, laundry, ironing, and free tour information. High speed internet and telephone/Fax facilities are also available. Depending on location and facilities prices could be anywhere from 20,000 to 60,000 Korean won per night. They are usually located in the center of a city, so there is always a subway nearby, an old market, pubs, restaurants, bars, or theaters.
Minbak
These are private homes almost always in the rural and mountain areas. They are somewhat similar to yeogwans but cheaper and rent rooms to augment family income on a seasonal basis. Because of the cheap price and easy accessibility, the conditions are not necessarily pleasant. Most will provide a standard breakfast. In some newer places there maybe attached bathrooms but mostly guests have to use communal bathrooms and washrooms.
Youth hostels
These hostels are open year round. But it is a good idea to make a reservation in advance. Generally, hostels are very large and some even offer facilities comparable to deluxe hotels. Thus, the price varies considerably from 10,000 won (for a single room) to 160,000 won (for a family room). All valid Y.H cards from other countries are honored but those without one are also welcomed however a little higher rate may be charged.
Condominiums
A rather new phenomenon in Korean accommodations, these apartment-style lodgings are located in tourist areas and are similar to the condos in the west. The cost differs significantly according to facilities, but it typically costs around 30,000 to 100,000 won per night. The luxury condominiums can cost up to 200,000 per night. Membership is required; however, they are open to non members also when demand is low. Condominiums provide the convenience and comfort of private cooking facilities and seminar rooms, swimming pools, recreational facilities and nearby restaurants and supermarkets.
Guesthouses
Guesthouses are inexpensive and are a good way to experience Korean culture and meet other foreign tourists. They are also ideal for back packers. Many guesthouses are family homes (generally sharing bathrooms) near downtown areas and tourist destinations. The price for one night is around 15,000-40,000 won.
Temple Stays
It is truly a unique type of accommodation in Korea whereby tourists can experience Korean culture and the lifestyle of Buddhist monks. However, Temple Stays operate on an irregular basis depending on the schedules of individual temples. Therefore it’s best to check in advance.
Cottages
Cottages are a new type of lodgings that have recently appeared in Korea. They are usually located in tourist areas filled with natural scenery and landscapes; definitely appealing to the romantic in you! These cottages range from high-class villas to simple log cabins.
Mountain Huts/Shelters and Camping grounds
Mountain huts and shelters provide only the basic necessities such as beds, light meals and clean drinking and bathing water but they are excellent lodgings for hikers in Korea's national parks. The grounds are also used for camping for which fees are inexpensive and include services such as tent rentals, shower facilities and bathrooms.
