Korean restaurants
Korean restaurants are every where. Many have the names of dishes written in Korean on the out side windows or on a placard next to the front door. Most post menu and prices on the wall. Fancier places have picture book menu in English as well. Most dishes are prepared in the kitchen but some are also prepared at the table.
Some restaurants are traditional Korean style where one sits on the wooden floor at a small table. Metal, bamboo or plastic chopsticks are used in combination with a shallow spoon. Using both spoon and chopsticks at the same time in one hand is considered bad manners. Large pans or deep dishes are placed at the center of the table for the communal stews along with a grill for meats.
Korean Food is served all at once instead of in courses. It is essentially hearty, salty and definitely spicy. Red pepper garlic and salt are used liberally. Barely tea is always served with the ordinary meal but if you have ordered meat and fish dishes then beer, rice wine or stronger alcoholic drinks are usually served. These drinks also accompany some of the Chinese and Japanese meals.
Restaurants in smaller towns are generally cheaper than in large cities. Hotel, tourist, and specialty restaurants are more expensive. An average range for the ordinary soup, noodle and rice dishes is ?2000-4000; for the fancier meal that has vegetable dishes and stews, its ?5000-8000; and ?7000-12000 for meat dishes. While the payment at most of the restaurants is made at the end, a few ask for payment in advance.
Chinese
They range from ordinary neighborhood shops to expensive ornate establishments which handle huge banquets. These typically have their names written in Chinese characters above the doors. Chinese sculptures and custom hand-painted murals depicting ancient Chinese stories complement the Oriental interior. The menu may range from a few basic dishes to several communal dishes -in authentic Chinese restaurants- costing up to ?40,000.
Japanese
They are distinguished by the wooden latticework on the front and the interior wood décor along with a sushi bar. These restaurants are immensely popular in Korea. Although other food is served, their specialty is fish and noodle dishes. While simple noodle dishes are in the ?2,000-4,000 range, most meat and fish dishes are on the expensive side.
Western
All hotels have either western restaurants or serve western food. Independent restaurants can also be found in large and medium cities.
Restaurants in large cities offer plenty of succulent international cuisines. In some of the high-class restaurants you have the choice of enjoying either an exquisite semi-buffet (splendid salad- and dessert-buffet with main dishes served on the table) or a-la-carte menu. The choice of alcohols is abundant.
Restaurants serving “fusion” foods are a new trend on the food scene. Typically, these combine the ingredients of the west with the flavors and spices of Korea and the Orient.
Cafes
They are immensely popular in Korea especially with the young crowd and urban professionals. Taking after European cafes, they serve coffee, tea, cocktails, and a little variety of snacks and foods.
Bars
In some of the top bars the drink menu is good, most top shelf that one would expect, and also an array of cheap Korean beers. Some also have an extensive wine list and bottled beer from all over the world. Entertainment is a DJ, a dance floor, Pool, and Darts. These places get pretty lively on weeknights as the young crowd makes their way to drunken bliss.
Fast food restaurants
The fast food market in Korea is also rapidly expanding now. Many international fast food chains are opening in the large cities and are becoming trendy attractions, particularly among younger people with more varied tastes.
