Hotels in Korea

A green, mountainous country, South Korea is a stunningly beautiful place, where the people all seem to be nature lovers. With increased tourist growth, the number of hotels in Korea has also increased. Large cities, towns and tourist areas all have many hotels which are registered with the government so they have to meet the specified standards. Hotels are classified into five categories: super deluxe (five-star), deluxe (five-star), first class (four-star), second class (three-star), and third class (two-star).

Majority of the top hotels in Korea are western-style, similar to those in any major city of the world and are located mostly in the center of a city, very close to subways, shopping malls, theaters and quite a few other attractions. Everything you could want in a big, international, downtown hotel but not cheap. The atmosphere of these hotels is welcoming. Some of theses hotels have unique interiors with each room designed in a different theme. Typical features of a high ranking hotel include various Korean/Japanese/Chinese/Western-style restaurants, bars, cocktail lounges, and coffee shops. These restaurants, although good, are some times outrageously expensive and it is quite irritating to come back to one's hotel after a long day of sightseeing and feel forced to go out again for dinner because the restaurants are just too expensive to patronize. The health clubs are free and very well equipped so the fitness freaks can work themselves out in these indoor gymnasiums, aerobics and fitness centers. The sporty types can sweat it out in the tennis courts, golf courts, bowling alleys, out door or indoor swimming pools. The best part is the night time when you can let loose and dance to your hearts desire at the night club and/or a disco till the wee hours or go for a bit formal entertainment in a theater restaurant. After a night at a disco, women and for that matter men also, can enjoy the luxury of massages and other beatifying facilities at the beauty parlors and health clubs with saunas to relax both the body and spirit and be rejuvenated and re-energized for another day of new fun filled activities.

Many hotels have conference rooms, executive floors, and/or business executive centers which provide services as secretarial help, computers, fax and photo copy machines, courier service etc.

All such hotels in Korea have twin rooms and a small number of Korean-style rooms with “Ondol” (heated) floors (a traditional Korean heating system using heat conduction under the floor and has much to do with the Korean lifestyle) and a Korean mattress “yo” and quilt. Most also have few single rooms and suites with private baths, heating and air conditioning, telephone, internet, television and music center. Many have stocked mini refrigerators also. Generally a double room in super deluxe hotels cost 250,000 – 380,000 Korean won (271 – 412 $US); 200,000 – 240,000 in deluxe hotels; 140,000 – 200,000 in first class hotels; 80,000 – 100,000 in second class; and 50,000 – 80,000 in third class hotels (a 10% service charge and 10% tax is automatically added to the bill). Suites often are double the price of a twin room with some going to exorbitant rates. Tipping is neither expected nor necessary.

People often seem to get mixed up considering hotels in Korea. This is mainly because in Korea hotels are expensive and a foreign concept. However the local Korean hotels are in abundance and are usually family-run friendly guesthouses called yogwans and Korean-style Inns (minbak). For budget travelers these are great, ideal also for backpackers. These days Yogwans have turned in to modern style private hotels. They range from basic to fancy, traditional to modern. The traditional yogwan is a single storey Korean-style building surrounding a court yard and the modern ones are multi-storied cement structures. Most rooms are Korean-style but many now provide western-style beds too. All but the cheaper places offer facilities like hot water in bathrooms, free breakfast, laundry, ironing, and free tour information. High speed internet and telephone/Fax facilities are also available. In some Korean hotels credit cards are also accepted. The prices vary depending on location and facilities. Generally they could be anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 Korean won per night. However prices may be significantly raised during peak seasons (April-May, July-August, and October-November) or holidays. These guest houses are usually located in the center of a city, so there is always a subway nearby, an old market, pubs, restaurants, bars, clubs, a park, a museum or other tourist attractions.

In Korea one thing is always guaranteed and that is the spectacular view outside. I personally love to stay in a place that has an outdoor terrace area, where I can sit back and enjoy the scenery or the live energy of the city or town. Korea for sure provides you with an unforgettable time no matter where you choose to stay.
